DescriptionThis large pewter bowl is part of a series of nested bowls recovered from the Winnipeg River (Ontario) in 1966. This bowl has a maker's mark "TOWNSEND & COMPTON" underneath the base. This firm was in operation between 1801 and 1811. The current interpretation for these objects is that they sank to the bottom of the river during canoe accidents. In the fur trade context, such items were destined for trade with Indigenous individuals and communities in exchange for food and furs.
