DescriptionThe square-back Windsor chair with bamboo turnings is a type that was introduced in Philadelphia about 1800. Its appearance in Nova Scotia is evidence of on-going American influence there. This chair is hot branded under the plank seat: DEGANT/WAR.HAL- [for Warranted Halifax]. In 1780, Joseph DeGant established in Halifax what is thought to be the first chair factory in Canada. He specialized in Windsor chairs.
