Description

These candlesticks were part of a set of four that were brought to Canada by Sir John Johnson (1756-1826). At the beginning of the American Revolution, Johnson raised and commanded the King’s Regiment of New York which grew to two battalions. Johnson was eventually promoted to the rank of brigadier-general. After the war, he supervised the distribution of lands to and the resettlement of Loyalist refugees in Upper Canada. Johnson himself was rewarded with large land holdings.
