DescriptionThe Regency “sabre-leg” chair, so-called because of the sword-like curve of its front legs, was introduced from England into British North America about 1805, where innumerable versions of this design were produced well up into the 1850s. This chair was part of a set owned by Sir Peregrine Maitland (1777-1854), Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, 1818-28.
