DescriptionThis is one of two identical punch bowls that were presented to Sir George Airey Kirkpatrick, Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Ontario (1892–1897), and Lady Kirkpatrick in November 1897. The official emblems include the coat of arms of Ontario flanked by sprigs of maple leaves, and a frieze of maple leaves with recumbent beavers encircling the foot. This, coupled with the fact that Kirkpatrick retired as Lieutenant-Governor on November 18, 1897, supports the hypothesis that the punch bowls were a retirement gift from the Government of Ontario.
