Description

On behalf of François I of France, Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) undertook three voyages of exploration to the New World in search of a northwest passage to Asia. La Grand Hermine was the ship used during Cartier’s second voyage in 1535-1536, when he explored the St. Lawrence River as far as present-day Montreal. His voyages were the foundation of France’s claim to Canada.
