Description"Arctic Scenery" was a multi-scene pattern inspired by the polar expeditions of Sir William Parry (1790-1855) from 1819 to 1824. The scenes are adapted from illustrations in Parry's published accounts of his voyages. They reflect the ongoing fascination with the search for a northwest passage through the Canadian Arctic. The border decoration, with its representation of flowers and tropical animals, has no relationship with the main scenes except in its "exotic" flavour.
