DescriptionThis slice of petrified wood is from an ancient relative of the living Araucaria or Norfolk Island Pine. Wood is petrified when a log is buried in mud and its chemical structure is gradually replaced by silica, which is deposited from the ground water percolating through the wood. Very often, fine details of the cellular structure are replicated in this process.
