DescriptionSofa tables were relatively common in the homes of well-to-do Canadians during the early 19th century, but were less common in the United States, except in New York.  Canadian sofa tables usually imitated English designs.  If this table is from Ontario, the cabinetmaker looked to a New York prototype, which is possible in view of the close cultural connections between the two regions. Otherwise, it probably had a New York origin.
