Description

This graceful wooden headrest would have been used in life by its owner, and quite probably put into the tomb with him or her, to support the head of the mummy.

The carefully carved crescent-shaped piece would have fitted under the back of the head, while the columnar section lifted the head up off the bed to help keep the owner cool in the warm nights.  Almost every Egyptian would have owned such an item in life.  Amulets in the shape of head-rests, as recommended by the Book of the Dead, Spell 166, were often provided for the dead
