The sweet expression and almond-shaped eyes suggest this limestone sarcophagus head was carved at the end of the XXXth Dynasty or the beginning of the Ptolemaic period. The lack of an extended cosmetic line is unusual for the period. The head was purchased, with no indication of provenance, from a dealer. Neither the name nor gender of the owner of the sarcophagus is known. A name and titles would probably have been carved down the front of the complete sarcophagus, along with the standard offering formula.
Inside the sarcophagus, the deceased would have been wrapped in linens, covered with a bead-net, and probably sealed into a wooden inner coffin.
