This cup was found in a foundation deposit near the southeast entry to the Temple of Osiris at Abydos. The deposit contained an ox skull, some leg bones, two cups and two jars. These objects were votive offering placed in the foundations of the building as part of a ceremony in which the temple was dedicated to the god, theoretically by the king. This tall cup with everting walls and flat base is made of Nile silt. There is an uneven band of white around the rim inside and out, perhaps from gypsum used in the foundation ceremony. A few splashes of white also appear on the interior walls and on the base of the vessel.
