Simple strings of beads like this are very common in Egyptian collections.  Sometimes the string represents a true ancient assemblage from a tomb, but more often the beads were collected from loose sand, perhaps on the floor of a tomb, perhaps in the debris of a temple.  At Deir el Bahari, where these beads were found, it was customary during the great festivals of Hathor, to wear such beads in her honour, and, it seems, to devote them to the goddess by leaving them at her shrine. Over the years, those in charge of shrines often swept the floors clear of such offerings, so that the remains of thousands of necklaces were found at the edge of the temple platform, sometimes still strung on their original cord, sometimes part of a mass of loose beads.
