Description Ancient Egyptian scribes and artists, or perhaps their apprentices, ground the pigments that they used, and mixed them with a gum or other medium. The grinding was done on a small, portable slab of stone with a stone pestle, or, occasionally, a wooden spatula. This example bears marks on the bottom attesting to its use.
