The blue anhydrite stone is indicative of a date in the Middle Kingdom or Second Intermediate Period. This miniature kohl jar has rounded shoulders, a wide-ledged rim and a flaring, flat base. The thick angled rim suggests a date in the Second Intermediate Period. Kohl is the name for a particular type of cosmetic used on the eyes in ancient Egypt. Both green and black eye paint were used in the Second Intermediate Period. The  tubular interior of this vessel still retains evidence of a black substance, likely the remains of the eye paint it contained This paint would certainly have made the eyes appear larger, but may also have had a prophylatic function.preventing eye disease and protecting the eyes from the glare of the sun.
