DescriptionDuring the Middle Kingdom, elongated carnelian barrel beads were often placed at the neck of mummies, sometimes strung with beads of green material, sometimes with the deceased's name engraved.  They are seen in the 'frieze of objects' sometimes painted inside coffins. During the Third Intermediate Period, the tradition of using sweret beads was revived, but they are often uninscribed.
