The dead were often wrapped in swaths of textiles on the North Coast during the Chimu and Inca periods. In many cases, the resulting bundle was then capped by a false head made from stuffed fabric. This mask was likely aligned with the deceased's face, placed between the layers of textiles when the bundle was being formed. As the copper in the mask rusted, the textiles adhered to the metal.
