Snuff containers

Maker: Tsonga Shangaan
Medium:Wood
Geography: Limpopo Province, South Africa
Date: 1933

DescriptionThe elegant snuff containers connected by a chain link are carved out of a single piece of wood. They were donated to the museum in 1933 and the early catalogue entry classifies them as possibly Zulu. The development of art historical work in south Africa in the last three decades has allowed us to attribute this piece to the Tsonga Shangaan group who lives between South Africa and Mozambique.
