Description

Studio photograph of Henry Beverly (H.B.) Johnson (1854-1894). On the back is written "A Birthday Present to dear Mother From her affectionate son H.B. Johnson 21st January 1879".  H.B. Johnson was brother to E. Pauline Johnson, poet, author, and performer. Their parents were Chief George H.M. Johnson, Mohawk (Haudenosaunee/Iroquois), and Emily (Howells) Johnson, an English woman.

In the early 20th century, Evelyn H.C. Johnson, sister of H.B. and E. Pauline Johnson, donated to the Royal Ontario Museum a large number of objects named the Chiefswood Collection after the name of the Johnson family home. In this collection, Evelyn Johnson created a remarkable record of her family over four generations, and of events that involved the Iroquoian people at Six Nations from the end of the American Revolution to the Six Nations Agricultural Fair of 1922.
