DescriptionThis Kongo-style power figure is indicative of the eclectic style choice of contemporary Foumban workshops. Ibrahim Nfoupouopougnigni works in several different styles although recently he has been specializing mostly in Yoruba, Ibo, and Kongo. This piece is indicative of the current chain of production for tradition-based art in Foumban, where carving and patina workshops work in collaboration to produce pieces that look like works published in art catalogues. Increasingly, the carving workshops in Foumban specialize in styles that are not typical of the Grassfield region as these are more requested on the market. Most times carvers do not copy specific pieces but create newly invented work in a variety of styles.
