DescriptionThis representation of Christ's victory over hell is the ultimate symbol of Redemption in the Orthodox church. Christ is seen descending into the earth, breaking down the prison doors of those who are bound. His resurrection (still to come) is symbolized by the spiritual raising of Adam, and with it the whole of mankind is freed from eternal damnation. Christ, in his conquest of hell, has founded a new Christian Kingdom.
