DescriptionThe Feast of Koimesis celebrates the glorification of the Mother of God for serving the incarnation during which the Son of God assumed his human nature in the womb. The early Orthodox iconography of the Koimesis represents the Mother of God on her deathbed surrounded by the Apostles. Christ in Glory is receiving the soul of his mother in the form of a swathed child. Only later do we see Marry's ascent into the upper parts of the pictures. Our Icon includes a scene from the story of the defiant Jew, Jephonias.
