DescriptionThe picture shows the episode of the Flight of the Holy Family into Egypt, described in the Syriac "The Vision of Theophilus," and expressed in the words of Mary "…I was left under the tree feeding my Son at the breast". In contrast to Western art, Icons from the East reveal a dislike of natural reactions. There is no gesture of emotion, as seen in pictures from the West. Through the Child here is suckling, its right hand gestures of blessing, indicating that the Christ Child of Orthodoxy always remains the Lord. The Milk-giving Mother of God is a symbolic Icon.
