DescriptionThe central scene is based on the design, from around 1880, by Helen Jane Arundel Miles that was part of a series of tiles representing the 12 months.

A watercolour artist, illustrator, and designer, Miles, supplied Wedgwood with several series of designs for tiles around 1880. Her subject matter was children undertaking domestic pursuits, much like the better-known Kate Greenaway (English, 1864 - 1901), an illustrator whose work was reproduced for cards, calendars, children's books, and magazines.
