A samurai wakashu uses his left hand to reach for a young woman’s breast while his right reaches around to between her legs. The setting is clearly his family residence. In the tokonoma is a lion-shaped incense burner and a hanging scroll with the Chinese character for “biwa.”

Wakashu: “If you listen to what I’m saying, I’ll ask your mother and make you my concubine.”

Girl: “Hey, what are you doing? Behave—people are watching.”
