DescriptionDuring Song and Yuan, China's ceramic industry blossomed. Centuries of effort had produced a level of technical mastery of the kiln and materials that now set potters free to experiment with new glazes and approaches to decoration. Mass production techniques were developed to meet ballooning demand. Under these stimuli, kilns thrived in many parts of the country. The best of these produced stonewares of calm beauty marked by elegance of form, harmony of proportion, luminosity of glaze and subtlety of decoration. In the latter years of the Yuan dynasty, Chinese potters perfected the recipe for porcelain, a discovery that was to dramatically alter the course of world ceramic history.
