DescriptionThe decoration is inspired by the work of Kate Greenaway (1846–1901), a well-known illustrator whose work was reproduced for cards, calendars, popular children’s books, and magazines. The central motif of children playing badminton was part of the “Playmate” series of transfer prints. These are attributed to Thomas Allen (1831–1915), who joined Wedgwood about 1875–1876 and was director of the company’s Fine Art Studios from 1878 to 1898.
