DescriptionThis epitaph honours Yang Shun, a general who served Empress Wu Zetian (c. 625 – 705). One of the most powerful women in Chinese history, Wu Zetian changed the name of the dynasty from Tang to Zhou. To symbolize the advent of her own dynasty in 690, she commissioned new and unfamiliar written characters to replace twelve commonly-used characters. Several of these are found here, although all twelve were discontinued after the Empress’ death.
