DescriptionThis portrait comes from an album containing 10 double leaves. Each portrait is accompanied with an inscription on the facing leaf giving information about the subject’s names, birth and death dates, as well as the age when he/she passed away. Since the album is incomplete the relationships between those portrayed are unclear. Master Heqi, also known as Wen’an and Qianjiu, was born in 1696 and died in 1766 at the age of 71. He is represented as a bearded man with an angular face and wrinkles around his puffy eyes. Both he and Master Yinzhi are in formal court attire which is comprised of a dragon (mang, four-clawed) robe worn with a flared shoulder collar (piling) and a surcoat (bufu) bearing his badge of rank (on both front and back). The court necklace (chaozhu) is also an important accessory.
