DescriptionTombs of prominent people featured stone animals and officials standing at the front of the mound. The number, size and type of stone guardians were determined by one’s social status. Centuries later few remain on duty, local farmers having acquired the valuable stone to make more practical objects such as millstones or mortars. This tiger is so weather-beaten that determining its age is difficult, but it derives from the Tang dynasty or earlier.
