DescriptionSince the Song dynasty (960 – 1278), Maitreya has been equated with an eccentric monk who lived around 900. He had a fat belly and carried a cloth bag, and so he was called Budai (cloth bag). This is the "Fat Belly Buddha" frequently seen in Chinese restaurants and shops.
