DescriptionThis Guanyin (a Buddhist deity recognizable by the small buddha in the crown) is one of the most famous Chinese sculptures in the ROM. It has been repainted at least four times, most recently in the 19th century. On the inside, it has a dedicatory inscription that says: "In the 6th year of the Mingchang period (AD 1195), the abbot's attendant Cuan of Nanbuchen village invited this deity to the city of Hongdong in Pingyangfu. Recorded by Jia Yan."
