Emperor Septimius Severus

Severus was born in 146 AD at Leptis Magna, Africa. He was a soldier of outstanding ability and defeated his rivals to become emperor in 193 AD. This heroic portrait continues the style of the Antonines with deeply drilled hair and beard.
