DescriptionThis juvenile skate (13.5 cm in length) has been cleared and stained, a technique that digests the muscle fibres with an enzyme leaving only the transparent connective tissue. The calcium is stained by Alizarin red and the cartilage is stained by Alcian blue. This process allows ichthyologists to examine and compare the osteology of fishes. The “wings” of the skate are modified pectoral fins (=arms) and consist of numerous cartilaginous rays. The pelvic fins (=legs) of the skate are much smaller with fewer rays. Also visible are the large and sharp star-shaped thorns of the upper surface.
