This photograph is a painted portrait of an unknown woman to commemorate her life after she had passed away.  This photograph is dated to August 1988 according to the inscription, which also lists the photography studio as P. Gomes & Co., based out of Bombay (Mumbai), India. The memorial portraiture is an important part of Indian mourning practices.

This photograph is part of a series of photographs dating from 1900-1990. Some are painted photographic prints, while others are small studio photographs. Notably, many of the photographs are dated and signed by the photography studio, making them particularly rare as this type of information is often lacking from many archives.
