DescriptionOn one side is the usual image for this type of vase. Athena armed with shield and spear faces left. This is the Athena Promachos (literally "Athena who stands in the front line of battle"). On either side of her are columns surmounted by cocks. There are no inscriptions beside the columns. On the other side are four naked athletes competing in a foot race, showing that this amphora was a prize for the victor of the foot race in the Panathenaic Games.
