DescriptionAlthough they were large and conspicuous, dinosaurs made up only an extremely small part of the total diversity and abundance of life on earth. Insects today make up over 80% of all known animal species. They were probably similarly diverse and abundant in the past. However, insects are rarely preserved as fossils because their bodies are fragile and easily destroyed after death. This extraordinarily preserved fossil katydid from Kazakstan lived alongside dinosaurs. It even shows the colour pattern on its wings.
