DescriptionThe giant sea turtle Archelon shared many features with modern marine turtles. Its forelimbs were modified into paddles that propelled it through the water. The shell was reduced to a series of irregularly-shaped bony plates embedded in a leathery skin. The lighter shell may have made it easier for the turtle to swim or to haul itself out of the water to lay its eggs.
