Exotic species were sought for raw materials to produce luxury goods and fashionable accessories that expressed status and wealth. Egret and bird of paradise feathers were sought because of their exquisite delicacy. Prominent American socialites and the newly-formed Audubon Society pressed for legislation to protect North American bird populations that were being decimated for fashionable feathers: the first US law was passed in 1901 to protect water birds.
