DescriptionThis 18.2 cm piranha was captured in October 1990 on a field trip to central Guyana conducted jointly by the ROM and Youth Challenge International—a charitable organization whose projects in community development, health promotion and conservation are conducted by international teams of volunteers aged 18-35 years. The sharp triangular teeth of this potentially dangerous piranha are used to cut chunks of flesh out of its prey. The survey team found the waters filled with these piranhas, but the only injury resulted when a team member was bitten while removing one from a net.
