DescriptionThe Central Stoneroller, Campostoma anomalum, lives in medium to small- sized streams where it scrapes algae off the bottom with its specialized mouth. Sometimes called a "stream cow", it can dramatically alter the flora and fauna of a stream where it occurs in abundance. The range of the Central Stoneroller extends from Ontario south to Texas and west of the Appalachian mountains to Colorado. It was first reported in Ontario in 1972 and, since then, has expanded its range through much of southern Ontario. The species has the general protection given by the habitat sections of the Fisheries Act. It is used as live bait by fishermen and its recent expansion in Ontario may be due to introductions into new watersheds from bait buckets.
