Description

This furnishing fabric has an all-over geometric lozenge lattice design framing crosses. On three sides is a border of similar but simpler design. Only one side has the remains of an outer border with a row of animals pacing to the right. Rare examples of brocaded decoration are difficult to date because they are so different in style and consist largely of simple geometric motifs. Similar example in the Katoen Natie collection, Antwerp and the Louvre, Paris have been radiocarbon dated from the 5th to 10th century. Certainly, the style of the animals would indicate a date after the Arab conquest.
