Description

Tiraz textile fragment. Linen and silk tapestry in a loosely woven linen tabby ground. This bold, elegant inscription in brown silk differs from later examples in that each letter is individually woven in the tapestry technique. The inscription is incomplete but mentions that it was made for the Abbasid caliph al-Muti (946 – 974). It is done in the angular Arabic script known as kufic, which was used in textiles until the 12th century.
