The inner bark of trees has dressed the peoples in tropical areas around the world for most of human history. Soaking, fermenting and pounding bark for days with a series of ever-finer stone and wooden mallets stretches bark fibre to many times its original size. By the rhythm and timbre of the beating, villagers can judge from afar the progress of their neighbours’ cloth making.
