DescriptionTiraz textile fragment (turban cloth?). Undyed linen tabby with 2 inscription bands in naskhi script worked with tapestry weave in black silk. Plain black and red silk bands across the top, below the warp fringe. The script is in naskh, the first of the six traditional Arabic calligraphy styles. Comparisons with similar tiraz textiles produced in this era suggest that this piece could have been made for the Fatamid caliph Al-Hafiz (r. 1130–49).
