Description

The heraldic motifs in this hanging may have been drawn from genuine family crests, but they have not been identified. The format of a central medallion and corner elements derives ultimately from Islamic art and is seen from the early Islamic period on book bindings and manuscript pages, and subsequently on carpets and textiles. Its versatility and rectangular format were perfect for Western bedcovers and wall hangings, and, when used in combination with the typical floral motifs of Western-market chintz, became completely disassociated from its Middle Eastern origins.
