DescriptionFrom about AD 400 to 900 waves of nomadic peoples swept across Europe and Byzantium. The Avars settled in Hungary and the northern Balkans. The Goths moved to southern Russia; the Merovingians poured into Belgium and northern Gaul. The Vikings raided Europe and even reached Constantinople. These people dressed in close-fitting garments – their tunics and pants usually belted, the cloak fastened with a brooch or pin. Their jewellery reflected their social status.
