DescriptionThis quilt won several prizes for design and workmanship at a number of country fairs in late 19th century Ontario. It was sewn by the donor's aunt and mother, and would have only been used for special occasions or for decoration. Though some of the flowers and plants are recognizable from a rural garden, the quilters were more interested in the overall design and colour balance than botanical accuracy. A ROM botanist attempted to identify the flowers as follows: 1. stylized fuschia or honeysuckle 2. maroon rose 3. purple sunflower or aster 4. stylized peach flower or hollyhock 5. blue morning-glory 6. purple bellflower 7. pink tulip 8. pink rose 9. red rose 10. bluebell 11. pink rose and 12. black-eyed Susan.
