Description

Lions in a plant scroll. The inhabited plant scroll, a motif popular throughout the Roman Empire, was later incorporated into the tiraz bands of Muslim Egypt. This piece relates to a textile with an inscription mentioning the tiraz at Bahnasah, the major city of the Fayyum, and a date c. 850.
