DescriptionThis tiraz textile fragment was perhaps part of a turban. It is made of glazed linen tabby with complete embroidered inscription in red silk. Historical inscriptions were often embroidered near the end of linen fabrics which may have been wrapped as turbans in graves. The sharp edges indicate that it was cut recently. The text contains typical information, although the embroidered date does not coincide with the ruler’s reign. It reads: In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. Blessing from Allah to the Caliph Muhammad the Imam al-Radi Billah, Commander of the Faithful. From that which the wazir Muhammad ordered to be made in Misr in the year (3) 23/  .
